How much does a pool lead cost? Cost per lead versus cost per signed job

Short answer

There's no single price for a pool lead. It depends on your market, season, ad quality and what counts as a lead. Cost per lead tells you little, because a lead can be a casual browser or a ready buyer. Track cost per booked in-home appointment and cost per signed job instead. With Aqua Expand, a builder pays ad spend from $30 a day plus $150 to $200 per qualified in-home appointment, which works out to roughly $240 to $330 all-in per appointment at $30 a day.

Three numbers, and why the last two matter

NumberHow to work it outWhat it tells you
Cost per leadTotal cost ÷ form fillsLittle on its own. A lead can be a browser or a buyer.
Cost per booked appointmentTotal cost ÷ in-home appointments that happenedHow well your leads turn into real visits.
Cost per signed jobTotal cost ÷ contracts signedWhether the marketing pays for itself.

A worked example

This uses the same defaults as our pricing calculator. It's an illustration, not a promise of results.

Ad spend for the month$900 (about $30 a day)
In-home appointments10
Fee per qualified appointment$175 (the middle of $150 to $200), so $1,750
Total cost$2,650
Cost per appointment$265
Signed jobs at a 25% close rate2.5
Cost per signed jobAbout $1,060

Compare cost per signed job with the gross profit on a typical pool, not with the sale price. At $30 a day, the range is 7 to 10 appointments a month, so the all-in cost per appointment lands around $240 to $330.

What moves the cost

  • Your market. The number of builders bidding for the same homeowners.
  • Your drive radius. A tight radius reaches fewer people, and a wide one brings leads you won't drive to.
  • The season. Homeowners plan pools months ahead.
  • Your photos. Real finished pools from your own work. What a good ad looks like.
  • The offer and the form. A clear offer and questions about budget and timeline.
  • How fast you reply. A slow answer wastes a lead you've already paid for. How to qualify a lead quickly.

What counts as a lead? Ask before you buy

Vendors use the word for very different things: a form fill, a lead shared with other builders, a lead someone has called, or a booked appointment. Before you compare prices, ask what you're getting, whether anyone else gets the same homeowner, and what happens when the homeowner doesn't answer.

How Aqua Expand prices it

Aqua Expand charges $150 to $200 per qualified in-home appointment, and you pay it once you have met the homeowner. Nothing is charged up front and there are no long-term contracts. Ad spend is paid directly to Facebook and Instagram. At $30 a day in ad spend, expect 7 to 10 in-home appointments a month, qualified on budget and timeline. It scales in a straight line, so $300 a day is ten times that: 70 to 100.

We're selective about who we work with, and we take one pool builder per service area. Once you're closing jobs from the campaigns, we look to build a long-term partnership.

Questions pool builders ask

How much does a pool lead cost?

There's no single number. It varies by market, season, ad quality and what is counted as a lead, and published averages differ widely. A better measure is cost per booked in-home appointment. With Aqua Expand that is ad spend plus $150 to $200 per qualified appointment, about $240 to $330 all-in at $30 a day.

Is a cheaper pool lead better?

Usually not. A cheap lead that never answers the phone costs more per signed job than a pricier one who books a walkthrough. Compare cost per signed job.

How many appointments does it take to sign one pool?

Divide 100 by your close rate. At a 25% close rate that's about 4 appointments per signed job. Use your own close rate, because it varies a lot between builders.

Are exclusive pool leads worth more?

An exclusive lead goes to one builder, so you're not racing other builders for the same homeowner. Aqua Expand never resells leads and takes one pool builder per service area.

What should a pool builder pay per signed job?

It depends on your gross profit per pool. Work out the profit on a typical build, then compare it with your cost per signed job. The calculator on our pricing page does the arithmetic.
